The creation of MTV revolutionized fashion industry. For some this was what they were waiting for and for others, it was nothing but a bad hair day that would last a decade.
The clothes worn in the 1980’s were depicted people who were trying to find themselves. The clothes were loud, big, bright and gaudy. Men wore make up and grew long hair. Women wore short hair, or long hair with very tall bangs, the feather looked was a popular style. Lots and lots of hairspray was used in the 1980’s, Aqua Net was a staple. Jelly bracelets, jelly shoes, neon clothing, leg warmers and Guess Jeans, the preppie look, and lace gloves were the rage of the 80’s.
Accessories were big and gaudy. Multiple necklaces were worn with large medallions. Earrings were long and dangly. The fashion look that was most powerful in the 1980’s was the very wide shoulder pads. Women walked around looking like line backers on football teams. Shoulder pads began to act as an accessory and started to appear detachable so they could place them in sweatshirts, t-shirts and sweaters in addition to jackets.
